When you discover something that nourishes your soul and brings joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life. -Jean Shinoda Bolen Spanish Word for the Month: Feliz Navidad~Merry Christmas [Pronounced: Fay-lees-gnaw-vee-dawd]
December 10, 2002 Dear Friends and Family, December has been a month for reflecting. The passing of this year signifies various milestones; a year of growth, learning, adventure, and challenges. It also marks times of struggle that come from being far from home and far from the familiarity of our “other” life. The New Year represents a sense of anticipation knowing that we will be home in less than eight months as we are planning to come home for Shawn’s sister’s wedding in July 2003 and that will complete our two year commitment. We just finished reading a book my dad sent us called, The 100 Simple Secrets of Happy People: What Scientists Have Learned and How You Can Use It, by Dr. David Niven. For a change in our monthly updates we decided to share a few of our favorite insights from the book that have uplifted and encouraged us in our journey. We hope this will serve as one of many positive Christmas reflections for your month. The book is divided into 100 short passages that are illustrated with clear examples and include straightforward explanations of the science behind the topic (the following excerpts are taken directly from the book copyright 2001 HarperCollins). SIMPLE SECRET #1 Your life has purpose and meaning. You are not here just to fill space or to be a background character in someone else’s movie. SCIENTIFIC STUDY: Studies of older Americans find that one of the best predictors of happiness is whether a person considers his or her life to have a purpose. Without a clearly defined purpose, seven in ten individuals feel unsettled about their lives; with a purpose, almost seven in ten feel satisfied. Lepper 1996 |
SIMPLE SECRET #23
Don’t let your religious beliefs fade. Everywhere in our world there is mystery. Everywhere there are questions. Our faith offers answers, consistency and hope.
SCIENTIFIC STUDY: Research on the effect of religion on life satisfaction found that those who had strongly held spiritual beliefs were typically satisfied with life, while those who had no spiritual beliefs typically were unsatisfied. Gerwood, LeBlanc, and Piazza 1998.
SIMPLE SECRET #43
Keep your family close. As family members scatter across the country, it becomes easy to forget to include them in your thoughts and in your time. Keep up the contact; share with your family the news of your life.
SCIENTIFIC STUDY: Studies that examine the importance of family to senior citizens as compared to adults not yet entering middle age show family relationships to be an equally crucial component of life satisfaction for both age groups. O’Connor 1995
SIMPLE SECRET #62
There will be an end, but you can be prepared for it. One of the greatest sources of anxiety as we age is that we will never get a chance to do that thing we always wanted to do, or to finish that project we were working on years ago, or to mend the fences that may have fallen into disrepair as our relationships evolved. Don’t wait until the end of your life to figure out what you wished you had done. Think of those things now and do them.
SCIENTIFIC STUDY: Research on senior citizens finds that those who are most comfortable with their own mortality do not ignore the matter, but prepare themselves for it. Oates 1997
SIMPLE SECRET #98
You have not finished the best part of your life. There is a myth that only the young can enjoy life to the fullest. The truth is that older people do not consider their young days to be their best days; most enjoy their senior years more than any other part of their life.
SCIENTIFIC STUDY: Researchers conducted a long-term study of northern Californians, interviewing subjects multiple times over three decades. When asked when they had been the happiest in their lives, each time eight out of ten answered, “right now.” Field 1997.
May God bless you in His Christmas season (as you discover His purpose and meaning for you) while celebrating the best part of your life…right now!
Merry Christmas,
Shawn and Jennifer
